Prospective Payment System (PPS)

KCP seeks to ensure that Medicare funding, which covers treatments for approximately 80 percent of dialysis patients, reflect the true cost of providing care. In 2014, the Protecting Access to Medicare Act (PAMA) provided some relief to providers from the deep cuts CMS sought to implement under the American Taxpayer Relief Act (ATRA). Nonetheless, the economics of dialysis care are tenuous, given the increasingly tight margins and the overwhelming high proportion of patient who rely on Medicare for their treatments. Recent data show that nearly 60 percent of dialysis facilities will have negative margins in 2015.
