President Donald Trump on Wednesday (July 10) issued an executive order calling for demonstrations to revamp the kidney care sector, and HHS immediately released a mandatory pay model and multiple voluntary pay models to do so.

“The state of care for patients with chronic kidney disease and end-stage renal disease (ESRD) is unacceptable: too many at-risk patients progress to late-stage kidney failure; the mortality rate is too high; current treatment options are expensive and do not produce an acceptable quality of life; and there are not enough kidneys donated to meet the current demand for transplants,” the executive order says.

HHS’ goals. HHS, in an “Advancing American Kidney Health” report released alongside the executive order on Wednesday, laid out department-wide goals to reduce the number of Americans developing ESRD by 25% by 2030; have 80% of new ESRD patients in 2025 receive home dialysis or a transplant; and double the number of kidneys available for transplant by 2030.

“Over the next several years, we will execute on the strategies laid out in the following pages: pioneering new payment models, updating regulations, educating and empowering patients, and supporting new paths for research and development,” the report says.
